Do this daily to banish body negativity for good!
As part of my journey to becoming a counsellor, I've learned a quick and simple exercise that has made a noticeable difference in how I feel about my body.
I want to share it with you because it’s incredibly easy to incorporate into your daily routine, and it can help improve your body image.
The Shower Exercise
Next time you’re in the shower, try this mindful exercise.
As you wash different parts of your body, take a moment to thank each part.
I know this might sound a bit unusual, but it’s powerful once you dive into it.
For example, when you’re washing your legs, say, “Thank you so much for carrying me around all day.”
When you wash your arms, express gratitude for all the things they allow you to do.
As you wash your stomach, thank it for digesting your food and providing you with energy.
Appreciate your eyes for allowing you to see and your brain for letting you experience the world.
I’ve been doing this every day for a couple of weeks now, and it’s made a big difference.
I’m feeling kinder and more compassionate toward my body.
It also serves as a nice grounding exercise that you can take with you anywhere.
Gratitude as a Grounding Technique
Here’s another interesting fact: it’s physically impossible to feel anxious and grateful at the same time.
So, if you ever notice anxiety creeping in, try shifting your focus to a grounding exercise centred on gratitude.
One that I find particularly effective involves visualising a blue light traveling through your body.
As the light moves, think about why you’re thankful for each part of your body.
This is a great exercise to do on the go when you’re feeling anxious.
However, I find that doing this in the shower every day is especially powerful.
The shower is often a place where negative thoughts about our body image can creep in, so it’s the perfect time to counteract those thoughts with positive, grateful ones.
