How to stay positive around negative vibes
We often talk about how important it is to notice the glimmers in our day, the things that make us smile, the tiny things that make life so wonderful.
This can be hard when we’re surrounded by people who love to focus on the negative.
We can’t always choose who we spend time with, perhaps it’s that Monday morning meeting with Colin from accounts, who always complains about the weather, the traffic, the coffee being cold, oh and 20 other things too.
It’s easy to say,
“just stay positive!”
but we all know that’s easier said than done, especially when it's scientifically proven and that the mood of people around us can take a toll on our own emotions.
💜 Hold onto your energy
Other peoples negative conversations & complaints can drag your mood down, leaving you feeling cynical or drained.
But letting someone else’s negativity dictate how you feel gives them more control over your emotions than they deserve.
Remind yourself you’re in charge of your own outlook.
Here’s some strategies that can help:
💜 A Grumpy Cloud in a Tutu
Sometimes the best way to keep your sparkle intact is through humour.
Picture the negativity around you as something ridiculous, like a grumpy cloud in a tutu.
It won’t fix their mood, but it gives you some emotional distance to keep enjoying your day.
💜 Respond with positivity
Some people thrive on negativity because they enjoy seeing how it affects others.
If someone makes a snide remark, like, “That’s an interesting outfit choice,” flip it by complimenting them instead, like,
“I really like your jacket today.”
If a neighbour complains about the weather again, point out something nice, like how great their garden looks.
When negative energy doesn’t get a reaction, people may stop trying to bring you down.
💜 Be honest if needed
Sometimes it’s worth addressing the situation directly.
You could tell the person privately that their negativity affects you, saying something like,
“I’d love to focus on the positive of this situation, and not dwell on the negative.”
Or
“You might not be aware, but when you focus on what’s wrong all the time, it starts to bring my mood down.”
💜 Stay kind, but consider keeping some distance
A persons negative energy can come from something deeper, so it’s important to be kind.
But never be afraid to remove yourself from a situation, or limit time with people who leave you feeling drained.
Perhaps that meeting with Colin can be an email exchange instead?
It’s not selfish to keep your own good vibe going—it’s survival.
And when all else fails, pretend you're a tiny, yet powerful little duck, frolicking through the chaos.
